Added On : 10th August 2016

DAMMAM: The annual report of the Ministry of Health for the year 2015 revealed that 57,913 women delivered their babies by Caesarean section or 'C-section'. This figure comprises 23.4 percent of the total number of deliveries that year, while the number of standard deliveries amounted to 189,172 throughout various parts of the Kingdom.

Obstetrics and gynaecology consultant Dr. Khalaf Saleh said that the number of C-section deliveries has increased during recent years, with more than half of all deliveries at some hospitals being carried out in this manner. C-sections can occur for a variety of reasons, such as the personal wishes of the mother, the possibility of risks during normal delivery, for IVF babies or multiple fetuses, because of the older age of the mother, in addition to other factors.

Gynaecologist Dr. Faeza Jalil said that both the doctor and the mother make the final choice about whether or not to have a C-section delivery, with some cases being referred for a C-Section during pregnancy, while in other cases a C-Section is chosen after the actual start of the delivery for medical reasons related to the health of the mother and her baby.
